The genius of the Leonardo
"Il genio di Leonardo (The genius of Leonardo)" -
exhibition displaying machines and inventions designed by Leonardo da Vinci and recreated by artisans according to Leonardo's drawings and notes. The idea was to create the devises using the techniques and materials of the 1500s.
The exhibition was at Via Roma, 20 (Lucca, Palazzo Cenami). This is an interactive exhibit, so we were both interested in seeing and, especially, touching the machines.
The machines are set up in the main hall at the entrance and the back hall. In the middle there is a screen showing a documentary on Leonardo's life, which is unfortunately only in Italian. Showings of the documentary are from 10:30am to 4:30pm, every 2 hours. It lasts about an hour and was quite interesting.
The fun part of this exhibition was the devises you could actually touch and work. There were a number of cogwheels and gears, mechanisms to transfer motion, studies of friction using bearings, ratchets and an octagonal booth lined with mirrors. We all had a good time standing in this last one.
Some of the devises were hands-off, including several of his flying machines, helicopters and machines used to test the beating of the wings and his bicycle. There were also a couple of his war machines including a very disturbing scythed chariot.
Leonardo's deep-sea divers suit, webbed gloves and skis to be used to walk on water were also on display.
All in all it was an interesting exhibit. It definitely illustrated the incredible range of Leonardo's talents.
Machines reproduced following drawings and designs by Leonardo Da Vinci show the creative genius of a man who was far ahead of his time.

И я так и не купила книжку обо всех этих изобретениях. Теперь пытаюсь найти и не могу вспомнить название. Попробую заказать в библиотеке вот эту Cooper, Margaret, The Inventions of Leonardo Da Vinci , а заодно и эту смешную"Patently Absurd: The Most Ridiculous Devices Ever Invented
